Candles and other items that assist you to concentrate on the work at hand is a good practice and will relax and put your mind in the mood it needs to be in to do this type of work. There are some people who practice the craft cover their altar with a white cloth and place fresh cut flowers on it every day not just as a way of making the room appear nice but also as a way to honor their craft and this is someone who takes the art they have learned serious.
It is important to always use the best candles, oils, incenses and other materials for spell casting that you can afford the main reason for this is that these materials are important for magic and spells and having the better ones often means having materials that are more pure. However there are many who practice this art who feel making there own materials such as candles and oils make their spells better because they took the proper care that magic materials need when being made.
